Democrat Immolation Watch

Howard Dean's supporters, true believers all, are good and righteously miffed that they're left with a choice between two reprehensible party hacks. As an erstwhile Steve Forbes/Tom McClintock supporter, I understand how they feel. On the other hand, I never thought Dean was for real. He always struck me as an opportunist, pure and simple, not a first-rate demagogue like Clinton.

Powerline has an interesting compilation of comments by disappointed Deaniacs. "If these comments are genuine and representative," the Big Truck writes, "they may be indicative of the disunity of the Democratic base and the persistence of the Nader threat." But he doubts it.

I doubt it, too, which is why I don't think the comments over at Blog for America amount to much. The Dean phenomenon always looked much larger than it really was, for reasons elaborated at length here and with great wit here. I suspect the Democrats will unite around their nominee, be it Kerry or Edwards, as always. Will some liberals stay home on election day? Sure. So will some disaffected conservatives. I'm not sure what I would do if I were a Dean supporter; I can't get my mind around that brand of dementia. I suppose they may be correct: a Bush win in '04 could pave the way for a Dean resurgence and victory in '08. And the Chicago Cubs could win the World Series this year. Anything's possible.
