Is it tragedy or is it farce? I don't know. But for LaToya London to be eliminated from "Idol"? Appalling. Simply appalling. But she'll be OK. She'll get a nice deal. It'll be OK. It'll be OK...
That said, Elton John is still an ass.
Release the votes!
Posted by Ben at May 12, 2004 10:00 PM | TrackBackLaToya's big mistake may have been saying she didn't care if she won. That clearly irritated Simon, and it certainly didn't inspire anyone to dial her voting number the way, say, Jasmine's crying did.
No, it's not fair, but the voting system is designed to reflect the depth of feeling for a given contestant (since you can vote multiple times), and it often penalizes the best performance (because everyone assumes that others will vote for the person). The results would be very different if you voted to remove someone, but it would also be a different, crueler show.
But, man, Jasmine needs to go.
Posted by: Monkey David at May 13, 2004 08:46 AMIt seems to me that the best strategy these days is to get close to winning, but to find a way to fall just short. That way you get all of the exposure but you aren't roped into a contract with Simon's (apparently) less-than-well-managed production company.
I still haven't seen the actual show. From what I hear it just sounds too... (?) But I've seen a special here and there abouthow American Idol works.
