Time for "The Schwartzenegger Question"

Okay, time for a little self-reflection. Back when Arnold was running against Tom McClintock, I asked the question, "If this guy had exactly the same policies and characteristics, but were running as a Democrat, would you ever even THINK of voting for him?"

It's time to ask that question about George W. Bush. If Bill Clinton was spending money like a drunken sailor, invading a country with an tenuous (at the very best) connection to a horrible terrorist attack on our soil, and allowing Janet Reno to run our civil liberties through Oliver North's paper shredder, would Republican journalists, pundits, and politicians give him a pass the way they have with King George? Would you be "supporting the President in a time of war," or would you show him the door?

Time for the S-c-h-w-a-r-z-e-n-e-g-g-e-r answer.

Uh, Robb? Those funny cigarettes the kids are offering you in Hawaii? You probably don't want to smoke those. Not even to be polite.

The key difference here is that George Bush is not running against Tom McClintock. He's running against John Kerry. Do you really believe that would be better?

Don't tell me about the Libertarian candidate, either--that's nonsense. He has no more chance of winning than Gary Coleman or Daniel Watts--or, for that matter, Tom McClintock--had of winning the Governor's race.

Has Brad given you Hugh's book yet?

Brad: Oh, that's right. When you spell his name correctly all of a sudden he's a principled conservative. My mistake.

David: The answer is that I don't believe that it will be worse enough for me to care if John Kerry wins. I believe Bush should be fired. I honestly believe he should be impeached, but that won't happen. I believe that fiscally, we will be much better off with Kerry in the White House and a Republican congress, and I also believe that the less we meddle in the middle east, the safer we are.

I don't imagine for a minute that anyone other than those two men will be our next president, but I DO believe that the more people who vote for "none of the above" will take us a (small) step closer to a rejection of the idea that you have to just swallow all principle and vote for the (slightly) lesser of two evils.

See my next post for your answer to the book question.
