But I had seen that a "beloved character" is knocked off in this book by a less beloved character.
On a hunch, I Googled using the title of the book, and the phrase "A killed B", with A replaced with the name of the character I suspected and B the one I suspected died.
I immediately found a hit with spoilers that confirmed my guess.
The books cannot be that good if, after reading book one of 7 or 8, I was able to correctly guess a significant plot twist in the latest.
