Via Andrew Sullivan, a great read from Christianity Today on why Torture is Always Wrong
Sullivan also offers a repeat-link to Al Mohler's excellent essay for Joe Carter's symposium on torture.
Posted by RobbL at January 27, 2006 05:12 PMThanks for pointing those out, RobbL. I'm not ready to read those two articles in depth, or to delve back into the symposium, but I've scanned the Gushee and Mohler essays and have recognized their merit.
I am going through some difficult times right now, and need to protect my psyche from some of the darkest details of human depravity and utilitarianism in a fallen world. If my life depended on it (no pun intended), I would make the effort. But right now, the well-being of my family, my students, and some friends, is what depends on my decision to table the matter.
I will say, however, that it looks like the arguments you have highlighted may make real inroads on my "Torture Is Almost Always Wrong" position.
