Cutting off their noses

So a weird recurring theme in the Oscars tonight was that you really should see movies in the theater, and not on DVD. They even had a montage of movies that could really only be appreciated on the big screen.

Of course,

a) most people have no opportunity to see movies such as "Gone With the Wind" or even "E.T." on the big screen and
b) you people are making a hell of a lot of money from people like me buying your DVDs, and will probably make a hell of a lot when a rebuy a few things on high definition DVD in a few years.

So shut the hell up.

But I loved Jon Stewart's comments after each of the self-congratulatory clips ("next: Oscar's salute to montages!").

I hope none of the "must-see-in-theater" movies were comedies. I don't want to get off on a rant here, but I just don't find that THX, dolby 7.1, and a larger screen add to the funny. Having a bunch of people I don't know packed around me doesn't add a positive effect either. Sure, there's the group response laugh thing, but it usually just covers up the next witty line, which is particularly annoying when the first gag isn't that worthy of a laugh.

I'd much prefer to see a comedy at home, with just my wife and/or a few friends.

Dramas too (including romances).

The physical cinema should be nothing more than an epic action arena.

I don't know, Fred and I though that Coppola's version of "Dracula" was HILARIOUS in a big theater with hundreds of people around us.

Seriously, though, I would rather see just about any movie in a theater. Nothing quite matches the experience, even with "small" films.
