I'm having a weird problem with my computer, and need some suggestions (and, no, "Get a Mac" is not gonna be helpful.).
Everytime (and I mean EVERYTIME) I open Power Line's blog site, the browser window shuts down. When I try and open it from a link to another blog or website, it shuts down both the Power Line blog window and the window that I opened it from. It didn't happen on my work computer, just at home. And I e-mailed Powerline, and nobody else had this problem. Just me. Obviously, it's just my computer. Naturally.
WTF?!

Sarcastic comment, alternate #2: Have you tried Hare Krishna? [Hat-tip to Kermit the Frog and the entire cast of the first Muppet Movie]
Posted by: Monkey RobbL at June 12, 2006 09:59 PMSerious suggestion #1:
Download Firefox (free from mozilla.com) and see if you have the same problem you're currently having with (I assume) Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Sarcastic bonus commentary:
Because if you're not willing to use a decent operating system, at least you'll have a decent web browser.
Posted by: Monkey RobbL at June 12, 2006 10:01 PMSerious suggestion #2:
Go to Symantec Security Response and click on the "Online Virus and Security Check" link. Run both the Security Scan and the Virus Detection routines.
Make sure your virus scanning software is the most current version AND has the latest scan file updates. Also, make sure you have spyware/adware detection.
Make sure you have a firewall. A cheap router's built-in firewall probably won't cut it. If you aren't confident in your hardware firewall, you'll want a software firewall, and it should be something better than the "Windows Firewall" that comes with Windows XP Service Pack 2.
At this point, I suppose I'm obligated to tell you that both Norton Internet Security 2006 and Symantec Client Security 3.1 include anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a software firewall. I run SCS 3.1 on my Windows laptop and have yet to be affected by any Windows spyware, adware, viruses, trojans, etc.
Sarcastic bonus commentary:
Unless, that is, you consider Windows itself to be spyware, adware, a virus, and/or a trojan. In which case I'm routinely affected by this unsecure, unstable, unreliable, pain-in-the-ass piece of junk Microsoft's been passing off as a real operating system.
Posted by: Monkey RobbL at June 12, 2006 10:26 PMSarcastic comments aside, I tried all that (not Firefox) and Powerline still shuts down.
Anything else?
Anyone?
Bueller?
Why are you reading Power Line anyway? Other than for those riveting posts on Everton soccer I mean.

Posted by: JamesPh. at June 14, 2006 07:47 AMFirefox is the first thing you should try. Determining if the problem is tied to IE is pretty critical to finding a solution. It's free, it's stable, it works.
Posted by: Monkey RobbL at June 14, 2006 11:41 AMYes, try the Firefox thing. You might use it all the time--it's much better than IE. I'd also suggest going into IE and making sure you've exported all of your bookmarks, in case you have to do a reinstall (which you probably will).
