Instamonkey: Not Erotic, But Unrealistic

I found Lisa Schmeiser's take on the Food Network phenomenon more interesting than the Bill Buford piece on which she comments, but what do I know? I don't watch Food Network, but I do frequent grocery stores. Monkey David, who knows from food, may have some intelligent commentary to add. As for me, I take my steak medium, my new potatoes roasted, and my spinich out-of-the-bag and e. Coli free.

That's the problem with Food Porn. You oughtn't look behind the curtain. Once you see how artificial it is, it loses a lot of its appeal.

Real vegetables are dirty. That's where one finds the line between softcore fantasy fluff and real harcore foodie action.

Funny, I posted my comment after reading only the Schmeiser piece. I wasn't aware that the term "Food Porn" had actually entered the lexicon. I thought it was just an InfMonks thing.

I'm going to claim that we started it. Time to edit the Wikipedia page.

Medium, eh? If it's a good steak, I definitely prefer medium-rare. Medium is for chain restaurants.

My grandfather ate his steaks medium. My father eats his steaks medium. And so I eat my steaks medium. Chain restaurants be damned!

My wife's grandfather ate his steaks charred until their texture resembled shoe leather. Now that he's dead, his widow enjoys her steaks medium rare.

What you need is a GOOD medium-rare steak. If you're a ribeye fan, then I couldn't recommend any place more highly than The Arches in Newport Beach. It's on CA-55 and PCH. Order the 26-ounce Ribeye (share it if you must, but order the big one) and order it medium-rare. They have a nice Super Tuscan wine on their list, or bring your own. And don't forget the tableside Caesar Salad.

After that, if you can go back to medium steaks, then there is no hope for you.

By the way, before I actually read the post, I thought this was going to be more of the Rep. Foley nonsense.
