Two Lessons Learned on my recent trip to Seattle

1. Fresh Hawaiian Ono prepared "Szechwan style" by special request to the chef: Delicious
2. Cream cheese omelette: Bleah!

Yes, Ono is wonderful. Still, you really need to learn to eat locally--you're in one of the great seafood capitals of the world, and you're eating fish they flew in from Hawaii?

At least it wasn't Outback steakhouse. (I hope.)

No, it was a place called Oceanaire. Very good. The menu changes daily based on what's arrived fresh, and they do a good job of helping you pick complimentary preparations and wines.

Living in Phoenix, I don't get much chance to eat fresh seafood, so I'm limited as to what I know I like. I told the waiter I was in the mood for something spicy, and that I knew I liked Ono. He went back and spoke with the chef, who offered to prepare the Ono in the same Szechwan style that the menu suggested for one of their crab entrees, so I went for it.

Next time I'll try to find out before I go what are "local" fish to the area. They have a location in San Diego, so I'll try to hit that the next time I'm over there.

Oh, yeah, I've been to the Oceanaire in San Diego. It's outstanding (and in walking distance of the ballpark). If you have a group of people, making a meal of a bunch of their appetizers is a good move...

I was just talking to one of my friends, and he said that his manager's team dinner after their district meeting was held at that location. 8 people ordered steak, and my friend was the only one to order fish. Hilarious.
