I've never much cared for Lew Rockwell or his arguments. But I always thought he was serious. Guess not.
For what it's worth, I don't think people are making fun of Paris Hilton for not wanting to go to jail. People are angry that an heiress and celebrity would presume to be above the law. But Rockwell doesn't much care for law -- the position of an anarchist, not a libertarian.
Posted by H.L. Monkey at May 12, 2007 08:47 AMWell, I'm not sure Rockwell would consider the term "Anarchist" a perjorative, although I'm guessing he'd favor "Anarcho-Capitalist" to distinguish him from the other variations, such as those that don't recognize individual property.
Like most folks' blog entries, this one was loaded with presuppositions you probably don't agree with, but the important ones for this post are:
1. Most state "licensing" activities are regressive taxes aimed at keeping people under their thumb.
2. Prior restraint is an inappropriate use of state power.
I don't know much about Paris's situation, but it appears that her license was suspended due to a drunk driving offense, and then she was arrested for operating a vehicle without that license. So, she may go to jail for not posessing a piece of paper she should never have been required to posess, which was taken away because she engaged in a behavior that MIGHT HAVE, but didn't actually, hurt someone.
Now, it was certainly sensationalistic to jump straight from Paris's indiscretion to the incarceration of Christ and the apostles, which makes it difficult to take him seriously if you don't read his (or other AnCap) blog entries routinely. But his point is sound, or at least consistent with hard-libertarian views of prior restraint and licensing.
Posted by: Monkey RobbL at May 12, 2007 10:00 AMOh, and I agree with you about why people are angry at Paris. I think Rockwell makes a very common Libertarian error here: presuming that most people have a libertarian deep down in their heart, trying to get out. In fact, I think Aristotle was more correct: Most people are naturally slaves. Sheep, looking for a shepherd. Because of this, Democracy doesn't really make us free, but merely lets us have some small amount of choice as to who will enslave us and how.
