Didn't see the GOP debate, but listening briefly off and on to Hugh's show today, I just get so tired of Hugh's continued shameless shilling for Mitt and the tiresome put-downs of Fred. Naturally, in Hugh's world, Mitt killed, and Fred was "just flat."
True?
And what's with "Fred!" "Mitt!" "Rudy!" " Hillary!", etc.? When did this happen? This is a Presidential election, not homeroom for crying out loud.
Posted by JamesPh. at October 9, 2007 09:30 PMWell, Hugh isn't wrong that the campaign is really about Giuliani vs. Romney vs. Thompson. But he is wrong that Romney has any hope of winning the GOP nomination. Despite Romney's best efforts, most evangelical conservatives simply will be unable to overcome the Mormon factor. Many will just stay home on election day. So it will be Giuliani versus Clinton. Therefore, there are two questions that conservatives must answer. Can they swallow their pride and pull the lever for Giuliani? My guess is probably not. So the next question is how they live with a Hillary Clinton administration? Invest heavily in the Euro, boys and girls.
Posted by: Ben at October 9, 2007 09:37 PMBen. Please. Let's have no discussion of a HILLARY! presidency yet. We have many months to contemplate that, and I prefer to not dwell on such sadness at the moment.
As for Hugh, well, he does have that book of his that he needs to justify.
I love Hugh. He is a good friend of this blog. And I cherish his smart, serious presence on the radio and in politics. But that is a pretty lightly populated (as in writers) blog that he's got. Fewer monkeys than we — and they all toss poo from the same waste bin.
It's much better to get your post-game (especially if you missed the game) from The Corner, or NRO's The Campaign Spot, which at least has varied champions of the candidates.
I still am loath to believe that (1) conservatives will choose ideological purity over a Hillary presidency and the 3-5 Supreme Court justices she will put on the court to shape our law and culture for at least two generations and (2) that a Candidate Rudy will not devise a strategy to energize the base to stop it.
At least that's what I tell myself to keep sane.
Posted by: Dr. Zaius at October 9, 2007 09:48 PMI'll say it so Robb doesn't have to. Man, I'm embarrassed to be in the same club as so many of these evangelical conservatives. Being saved clearly isn't the same as being smart.
